Most warehouses today are heavily automated. RF scanners drive task execution, RFID tracks handling and transportation units, and Material Flow Systems orchestrate PLC-driven robotic movement. The data is all being captured.

What is often missing is anywhere to see it. Task statuses sit in RF logs, checkpoint pings sit in RFID, and conveyor health sits in MFS queues — three systems that rarely meet on one screen. The SAP EWM Easy Graphics Framework (EGF) closes that gap from inside EWM.   • Live system Synch: Automated background updates keep your data fresh. This gives your team a clear, real-time view of running systems, letting them spot problems instantly and balance resources without delay.
  • Flexible Chart Layouts: You are not stuck with just one view. The framework lets you display system data wherever you need it. Developers can build central dashboards or embed live metrics directly into existing screens and pop-ups without messing up the main app.
  • Tailored User Profiles: The system offers two levels of customization to fit different job roles. You can create personalized layouts for individual user workflows or roll out standard, global designs across entire teams to keep everyone aligned.

3. SAP EWM Warehouse Cockpit capabilities

The SAP EWM Warehouse Cockpit is a real-world example of this framework in action. Launched with transaction code /SCWM/EGF, it acts as your main command center by turning complex warehouse data and AI predictions into simple, interactive charts.

This single visual dashboard lets operations teams track key performance indicators (KPIs) in real time using four main tools:

3.1 Customizing Your Warehouse Analytics

Standard cockpits give you a great baseline, but what if you need specialized metrics? EGF lets you create custom data points through SAP EWM measurement services. You can then plug these proprietary metrics straight into your main warehouse cockpit menu.

3.2 How It Works

Adding custom metrics to your dashboard involves a simple two-step process:

  • Define the Metric: Create your custom data points using standard or tailored tracking services.
  • Link the Dashboard: Plug those new metrics directly into your main warehouse cockpit menu.

3.3 Tracking Work Backlogs

Let’s look at a real-world example: tracking operational backlogs. To see how much work is piling up, you can set up a tool that counts open Warehouse Orders in a specific area for queue determination to plant intelligently or Wave’s scheduled to be released for Automatic Warehouse Task creation to deliver information “What matters most to them”.

3.4 How the Data Engine Works

The system pulls and calculates your metrics using three distinct tiers. You can find the configuration under

3.4.1 Basic Measurement Services (BMS)

These are standard, pre-built tools from SAP that track everyday warehouse tasks, like counting order lines or open tasks. Every BMS connects a specific name to two behind-the-scenes modules:

  • Filters: A screen where you pick your data criteria.
  • Queries: A backend search engine that pulls the raw numbers from the database.

3.4.2 Tailored Measurement Services (TMS)

Use the built-in wizard to customize standard tools for specific operational needs.

  • Setup: You must define your search filters. Setting alert thresholds is optional.
  • Output: It runs the search and delivers a single, real-time number.

Use Case for Threshold- Open Warehouse Order Backlog.

Your team is monitoring the total number of open orders in the Picking Zone. You set your performance thresholds based on how many unassigned orders the system detects:

🟩 Green (Normal Operations): 0 to 50 open orders- The current staff can handle the volume easily.

🟨 Yellow (Warning Zone): 51 to 100 open orders. Work is piling up. The supervisor receives a dashboard alert to monitor the zone.

🟥 Red (Critical Bottleneck): 101+ open orders. A severe bottleneck is occurring. The system triggers a bright red alert on the warehouse cockpit dashboard so managers can reallocate workers immediately.

3.4.3 Calculated Measurement Services (CMS)

Use a secondary wizard to mix different tailored metrics using math equations. This allows you to track complex efficiency ratios.

  • Example: Total Items / Active Workers = Average Items per User (e.g., 2,930 / 30 = 97.3).

3.5 Visualizing Your Metrics with EGF

EGF is the presentation layer that turns data points into interactive graphics called EGF objects. Your warehouse cockpit is simply a dashboard built out of these objects.

3.5.1 Supported Chart Styles:

  • 🚥 Traffic Lights for instant alerts
  • ⏱️ Speedometers for live speeds
  • 📊 Bar Charts for quick comparisons
  • 📅 Timelines for tracking workflows

How It Runs: When you open a cockpit (such as WHS_COCKPIT), a background code layer handles the complex processing to render your graphics flawlessly.

3.5.2 How the Dashboard Loads Graphics.

When a user opens a cockpit dashboard, the system follows a clean, three-step process in the background to build and display your charts:

  • Data Collection: The system calls a GET_DATA routine to pull raw values from the database.
  • Data Mapping: The code converts (class /SCWM/CL_EGF_CHART_DATA converts these values) those raw numbers into a standard structure, separating the dataset into clean categories and chart series.
  • Data Painting: The SAP Internet Graphics Service (IGS) takes that final structure and paints it onto your screen as one of 18 supported chart types.

4. The Decision Cheat Sheet: BMS vs. Standalone EGF

Deciding whether to build a full Basic Measurement Service (BMS) or stick with a basic database selection depends on your long-term goals. Use this simple framework to make the right choice:

  • Build a BMS if: You need to reuse this tracking metric across multiple applications or dashboards.
  • Build a BMS if: Your users need to change or filter the metrics using their own custom parameters.
  • Use a simple GET_DATA method if: You don’t need reusability or custom user filters. This allows for a fast, straightforward database lookup.

5. Picking Optimization Use Case

The Logistics Challenge: Shipping Before 11:00 AM

When your warehouse faces a hard 11:00 AM shipping deadline, picking items from scattered locations causes major congestion and slows down your routes.

You can fix this by fine-tuning your BMS selection parameters. Setting up your filters to track early wave cutoffs and specific picking locations lets you proactively manage these bottlenecks on your dashboard.

Assumption: Standard SAP EWM wave management is already up and running; our focus here is strictly on the EGF side.

6. SAP IGS Evolution & Roadmap

As warehouse technology evolves, SAP’s approach to data visualization is shifting away from legacy systems toward modern, cloud-based tools. Here is where the roadmap is heading:

  • Integrated IGS: Currently, SAP relies exclusively on the Integrated IGS version that is installed automatically with every SAP Web Application Server (AS). Integrated IGS is not part of the core kernel, which means it requires independent patching.
  • Shift to Client-Side Rendering: Moving away from heavy server-based graphics, SAP now utilizes client-side rendering with SAPUI5 and modern OpenUI5 controls. This approach leverages the browser's processing power, enhancing overall application performance and mobility.
  • Deprecation of Older Frameworks: Technologies that heavily depended on IGS—such as older Web Dynpro ABAP/Java environments and the BEx Web Application Designer—are deprecated in modern ERP environments.

6.1 SAP’s strategic direction

For custom data visualization, interactive charting, and business intelligence, SAP points customers toward:

  • SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) — the primary AI-integrated (Joule) BI solution for enterprise planning and visualization.
  • SAP Fiori and SAPUI5 controls — the core modern UI technology. SAP continues to invest in Fiori elements and flexible UI5 controls, which handle responsive charting natively without relying on legacy backend services.

Where this leaves you

The roadmap and the recommendation in this post are not in conflict — they answer different questions.

SAC and Fiori/UI5 are where enterprise analytics is heading: cross-functional reporting, planning, and business intelligence that spans the organization. That is the right place to invest for corporate visualization.

EGF answers a narrower and more immediate question: how does a supervisor see, on a screen above the picking zone, that the backlog has crossed 100 open orders and workers need reallocating now. It runs inside EWM, against live warehouse data, with no additional platform or integration layer. For operational shop floor visibility, it remains the practical choice today.

The gap worth closing first is the one between the automation you have already paid for and the visibility your supervisors actually get. A cockpit built on measurement services and EGF objects closes it with configuration and a modest amount of custom development — not a new platform.
